Dr. Alec Couros
GenAI Fellow
Dr. Alec Couros is a Professor of Educational Technology and Media at the University of Regina and serves as one of the University’s inaugural Generative AI Fellows. An award-winning educator, Dr. Couros is internationally recognized for his expertise in generative AI in education, AI literacy, digital citizenship, critical media literacy, open education, and ethical technology integration. His work has helped shape educational policy and practice across K–12 and higher education throughout Canada and internationally.
Dr. Couros has delivered hundreds of keynote presentations, workshops, and professional learning sessions worldwide, helping educators, school systems, universities, governments, and organizations navigate the rapidly evolving intersections of artificial intelligence, technology, pedagogy, and digital culture. His undergraduate and graduate courses have prepared thousands of educators to thoughtfully integrate emerging technologies into teaching and learning while emphasizing critical thinking, ethical practice, and human-centred innovation.
A leader in educational innovation, Dr. Couros is the former Director of the University of Regina’s Centre for Teaching and Learning, where he led institution-wide initiatives supporting teaching excellence, educational development, and the responsible adoption of emerging technologies. He also served as the founding Director of the Centre for Educational Research, Collaboration and Development (CERCD), fostering interdisciplinary research partnerships and collaborative educational initiatives.
As one of Canada’s leading voices on generative AI in education, Dr. Couros has worked extensively with ministries of education, school divisions, colleges, universities, professional organizations, and educational leaders to develop policies, frameworks, and practical approaches for the responsible integration of AI. His work focuses on AI literacy, ethical and transparent AI use, assessment redesign, academic integrity, digital citizenship, critical media literacy, and preparing learners and institutions for an AI-enabled future.
Throughout his career, Dr. Couros has helped shape successive waves of educational innovation. Long before the emergence of generative AI, he was an internationally recognized pioneer of open education and networked learning. His groundbreaking open online courses and massive open online courses (MOOCs), including the widely influential ETMOOC, brought together thousands of educators from around the world to explore connected learning, social media, and educational technology in open, collaborative environments. He was also the founding co-editor of in education, one of Canada’s early open-access, peer-reviewed education journals, and has been a long-standing advocate for open scholarship, open educational resources, and the sharing of knowledge beyond institutional boundaries. These contributions helped lay important foundations for many of today’s collaborative, connected, and AI-enabled approaches to teaching and learning.
Throughout his career, Dr. Couros has received numerous awards recognizing excellence and innovation in teaching, leadership, and educational scholarship.
