Observations may provide general feedback and advice or focus on a specific aspect of classroom practice, such as assessment, use of technology, or Indigenization.
What to Expect
A classroom observation includes three stages:
- Pre-observation meeting
- Classroom observation
- Post-observation meeting and feedback
1. Pre-Observation Meeting
Before the observation, a CTL team member will meet with you to discuss the observation process, focus, and schedule. This meeting may include:
- determining the date, time, and location of the observation;
- agreeing on the duration of the observation and any protocols or guidelines;
- establishing objectives and expectations, including specific areas for feedback;
- selecting the observation instrument or feedback form;
- discussing where the observer will sit during the session;
- reviewing the session content, expected learning outcomes, and technology used;
- sharing relevant teaching materials or handouts; and
- confirming expected deliverables and timelines.
2. Classroom Observation
During the agreed-upon teaching session, the CTL observer will aim to blend into the classroom environment without disrupting teaching and learning.
The observer will take detailed notes on areas such as:
- instructional techniques;
- student engagement strategies;
- classroom management;
- specific examples and key takeaways; and
- observed strengths and opportunities for development.
Brief verbal feedback and clarification questions may follow the class.
3. Post-Observation Meeting
Following the observation, a CTL team member will schedule a meeting to discuss feedback and reflections. During this meeting, the observer will:
- invite the educator to reflect on their teaching practice;
- highlight observed strengths;
- discuss opportunities for improvement;
- provide specific examples and actionable suggestions; and
- share the completed feedback form and other deliverables agreed upon during the pre-observation meeting.
Observation Report
Following the observation, the CTL staff member will provide a written observation report and discuss the findings and recommendations with the instructor.
If desired, the CTL can also provide an observation report for use in tenure and promotion applications.
