These workshops highlight examples of experiential learning from across disciplines, explore the application of experiential learning in teaching and learning, and create opportunities for shared reflection and discussion.
About Experiential Learning
Experiential learning is an engaged learning process whereby students learn by doing and by reflecting on the experience.
The Association for Experiential Education states that experiential learning “occurs when carefully chosen experiences are supported by reflection, critical analysis and synthesis.”
Experiential learning can include a wide range of activities, including:
- community engagement;
- fieldwork;
- practicums;
- internships;
- labs;
- simulations;
- case-based learning;
- project-based learning; and
- other applied learning opportunities.
Experiential Learning Cycle
Experiential learning is often grounded in a cycle of experience, reflection, conceptualization, and application.

Kolb’s experiential learning cycle includes four stages:
- Concrete experience
- Reflective observation
- Abstract conceptualization
- Active experimentation
This cycle emphasizes that meaningful learning involves not only participating in an experience, but also reflecting on that experience, making sense of it, and applying new learning in future contexts.
Workshop Goals
Experiential Learning Workshops are designed to:
- deepen understanding of experiential learning and its applications across disciplines;
- showcase examples of experiential learning at the University of Regina;
- support instructors in considering how experiential learning can be integrated into courses and programs;
- encourage reflection on the relationship between experience, learning, and student development; and
- create opportunities for discussion and collaboration among instructors and partners.
Workshop Format
Workshops may include presentations, examples from instructors or partners, facilitated discussion, and opportunities for participants to reflect on how experiential learning connects to their own teaching contexts.
